(Our luxury Amarante Nile Cruises dock at Luxor, Esna, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan on the River Nile allowing you time to visit the many ancient Egyptian monuments including the along the River Nile including Edfu Temple).
The origins of Edfu Monument probably date back to the Second Intermediate Period but the actual temple dates back to the Ptolemaic era. Construction work began during the reign of Ptolemy III (about 237 BC) and was finished during the reign of Ptolemy IV. With all the additional inscriptions and reliefs, Edfu Monument took approximately 180 years to be completed!
Edfu Monument consists of traditional elements found in Egyptian temples built in the New Kingdom together with a few Greek elements, such as the Mammisi seen on the west side of the main entrance to the temple.
The walls of the Mammisi at the Edfu Monument are decorated with scenes showing the story of the divine birth of Horus the child in the presence of Goddess Hathor, God Khenoum and other deities and Goddesses who were concerned with pregnancy and birth.
