Esna an Important Region in Egypt

Esna the little town of Egypt located about 35 miles south of Luxor was the Greek town named Latopolis. Esna has always been an important region especailly during the 18^th dynasty due to the developing relations with Sudan.  

Monastery of the Three Thousand Six Hundred Martyrs at Esna

Located just 4 miles southwest from Esna is the Deir Manaos Wa al-Shuhada (Monastery of the Three Thousand Six Hundred Martyrs). The 10t^th century church of this area is considered as one of the most beautiful church in Upper Egypt region.

The main attraction in Esna is the Temple of Khnum decicated to several deities and which stands in the middle of the modern town at a level about nine meters below that of the surrounding grounds. Most of the ruins of around the Temple and the old city are yet to be explored as they lay trapped underneath modern constructions.  Near the temple of Khnum also lie the carved cartouches of Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
